About
Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University
Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University, formerly known as Agra
University, was established on 1st July 1927 through the dedicated efforts of
eminent educationists such as Rev. Canon A.W. Davis, Munshi Narain Prasad
Asthana, Dr. L.P. Mathur, Lala Dewan Chand, Rai Bahadur Anand Swaroop, and Dr.
Brajendra Swaroop. Initially, the University’s jurisdiction extended over the
United Provinces of Agra, Central India, and Rajputana, with 14 affiliated
colleges and 2,530 students. Starting with four faculties — Arts, Science,
Commerce, and Law — it later expanded to include Medicine, Agriculture, Home
Science, Basic Sciences, Fine Arts, and Management.
Over the decades, the University has upheld a strong tradition of academic excellence, moral integrity, and commitment to research. Renamed Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University in 1995, it now serves the educational needs of seven districts under the Agra Division. The University proudly affiliates around 200 colleges, including the prestigious Sarojini Naidu Medical College, and operates from four main campuses — Paliwal Park, Khandari, Civil Lines, and Chhaleshar.
Today, the University continues to progress as a
vibrant centre for scientific, vocational, and innovative education, striving to
achieve national and international recognition. Guided by its timeless motto,
“Tamso Ma Jyotirgamay” — From Darkness to Light — it remains devoted to
nurturing intellect, creativity, and human values among its students.
